World Race Training Camp: A Series

Part Five: Fire

*I started this post over a week ago, but paused because I couldn’t eloquently say what I wanted to say. Anyways, I’m finishing it now. It’s still not how I wish, but I really wanted to share about this night, so there ya go!*

One night at camp, after a long day of worship, teachings, hiking, bucket showers, etc, our squad was told to meet back at the campsite after dinner. As were walking over there, everyone was questioning what the activity was for the night. We all hoped it was a campfire, but also knew that because its the World Race, we could be doing absolutely anything.

We arrived at our campsite pretty quick after dinner and had some time before leadership came to tell us what was next. During our little break, we talked, sang, and danced (shout to Tymon for putting up with my terrible two-stepping skills lol). Once leadership arrived, they told us exactly what we had hoped for, a campfire!! And they even provided stuff for smores (thank you AIM staff, y’all rock)!

We went to gather wood, then Katelyn sat in the fire pit and made us a fire. Then we all huddled around the fire and had conversations about all sorts of things from fireworks to New Girl to simple Jesus talks. Shortly after, the smores supplies were opened. Chocolate, marshmallows, & graham crackers. People began to grab a stick and roast away! However, I was deep in conversation and decided a smore could wait.

A few minutes later, a group of three of my squad mates (it was dark, so I really don’t remember who) had a little assembly line going and were making smores for everyone. I’m sure they were just having fun & enjoying the process, but to me it was a sweet act of love and service. Amidst the fun of the night, they simply stopped and took the time to serve. I pray this atmosphere service and selflessness continues to grow through our squad. Thank you to the three that served smores, you are so very loved & appreciated!!

Fast forward about 20min… I began to hear the sound of someone strumming guitar strings. I, then, turned toward the fire to see my teammate, Paul, playing some music and only a couple other people singing along. I joined in with singing and humming (I think being a dancer, I’m just drawn to wherever the music is) and slowly but surely the entire squad began to join in. The night ended with over 50 of us singing, worshipping, and sharing thoughts/prayers with each other around the fire and under a sky full of stars.

This squad is something special. God chose us to be together. We are His 44 and I’m forever grateful to be a part of it.

*Thanks for reading & being patient with me as I continue to write about training camp. More is coming soon. I’m thinking 2 more in this series. Subscribe so ya don’t miss out;)*
